Feeding Chickens: Red Pepper Flakes

This winter we added red pepper flakes to our chicken feed mix. Right now, we have about 40 birds free ranging on the farm. We usually use a 16% pellet feed mixed with black oil sunflower seeds and seasonally dried herbs. Red pepper flakes contain an active compound called capsaicin. Research shows it has antimicrobial and antiviral properties that can:

    • fight bacterial infections
    • disrupt parasites and worms
    • deter predators from eating the chicken feed
    • improve gut health and nutrient absorption

Red pepper works best with added to chicken feed with dried oregano. Like red pepper, oregano contains strong antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties and together they complement each other.

Some chicken lovers claim red pepper flakes increase egg production. After researching all my favorite chicken sites and books, I don’t believe it contains enough protein or calcium to increase laying frequency or quantity. Small amounts of red pepper can enrich the nutritional value of eggs and the color of the yolk though.

I added red pepper flakes just for the winter months when the hens aren’t laying as much. A good time to disrupt any possible parasites or worms and improve gut health. Last spring we were getting about 18 eggs a day, so we are excited to see production ramp up again! We have hens ages 2 to 6 years old and one beautiful rooster that is the best at taking care of his flock!

Warning. Use gloves. When mixing red pepper flakes into your chicken feed by hand, be careful not to touch your face or eyes before washing up. I learned this the hard way. LOL 🙂
